The opensource GNU counterpart of MATLAB is Octave. Just Try out Octave and see for yourself. Besides the fact that Octave is much lighter than MATLAB there are some advantages of being able to be run in architectures like that or raspberry pi. But Octave is still in development and many of the matlab inbult data science and image processing functions are not available in Octave.
