If your divorce has dragged on forever and become a court drama, you may have thought of changing your attorney. Indeed, it is your attorney's responsibility to help you navigate divorce and other family law matters.

To obtain the results you seek, you need the right attorney. The attorney-client relationship is based on trust and honesty - both critical in determining how smoothly your case goes.

Unfortunately, not all attorneys are capable of handling every one of the cases. If your attorney isn't yielding results, lacks ethics or honesty, or disagrees with your strategy, you have the right to dismiss them and hire a new lawyer.

But when is it too late to fire your attorney?

In short, you can fire your attorney at any time, but there may be consequences in some scenarios.

Repercussions of Firing Your Attorney

Before firing your attorney, you may want to assess how much money you owe them. The closer your resolution case the more you'll have to pay your attorney. If your case is in its infancy, you may not owe them much.

It's best to consult with another attorney before you fire your current representation. Your second attorney will determine how much you owe them and the risks of firing them during your case.

Another major factor is how close your case is to a resolution. If your lawyer lacks negotiating and/or litigating skills and no resolution is in sight, you may be better off with a more qualified attorney.

However, things change if your lawyer is close to reaching a settlement or verdict. If there are just a few days till resolution, it's better to stick with your current attorney. Hiring a new one will put you back to where you started, and your new lawyer may take even more time to settle.
